SEO for electricians and electrical contractors

SEO for electricians means making sure your business shows up when people nearby search for an electrician, or for the job they need: an EICR, an EV charger installation, a rewire or an emergency call-out. At Lekker Marketing, I build and fix electrical contractors’ websites so every service and area you cover is clear to Google, AI search and customers.

This page is part of SEO for trades, alongside SEO for plumbers and SEO for builders. Most electrical businesses start with a fixed-price SEO audit that shows what’s holding the website back.

What do customers search for when they need an electrician?

Customers search for the job, not just the trade. “EICR” is searched for more each month than “electrician near me”, and EV charger installation is a large search in its own right.

Electrical searches come from three quite different groups. Homeowners look for rewires, consumer unit replacements and EV chargers. Landlords need EICRs, which private landlords in England must have for their rental properties. Everyone needs an emergency electrician at some point, and those searches want a phone number fast.

A website that only lists “domestic and commercial electrical services” misses most of this. Each job type is its own search, and each needs its own page to be found for it.

What should an electrician’s website include?

The basics that decide whether someone calls you or the next result.

A page for each job

EICRs, EV charger installs, rewires, consumer units, fault finding and emergency call-outs each deserve a page that explains the job, who it’s for and what happens next.

Pages for each type of customer

Homeowners, landlords and commercial clients want different things. Separate pages speak to each one and help Google match you to their searches.

Proof you’re registered

Show your competent person scheme registration, such as NICEIC or NAPIT, along with reviews and photos of real installations.

The areas you cover

Name the towns and areas you work in, so Google can match you to local searches and customers know straight away whether you cover them.

How does Google decide which electricians to show?

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (see how Google chooses local results). For an electrician, relevance comes from pages that match each job and each type of customer, and prominence from reviews and a visible scheme registration.

You can’t change distance, but you can improve the other two. A complete Google Business Profile with the right categories, a website with a clear page for each service, consistent business details and genuine reviews all help.

Growth areas like EV charging are worth a dedicated page with real detail: the chargers you fit, what a typical installation involves and what customers need to prepare. That’s the kind of specific, useful page that ranks and gets quoted.

What a customer should see first

  3. Proof and contactYour scheme registration and a quick way to get in touch.

How is AI search changing things for electricians?

More people now ask AI tools and Google’s AI Overviews questions like “do I need an EICR” or “who installs EV chargers near me”. Those answers are built from pages that clearly explain the job and name the business, the area and its credentials.

Pages that answer real questions in plain language are the ones AI search can use. See AI SEO for how this works in practice.

How does SEO for electricians work?

  1. Review your services and customers

Start with the jobs you do, who you do them for and the work you want more of, such as EV installs or landlord testing.

  2. Check search behaviour and competitors

See what customers in your area actually search for and which local electricians show up, to find realistic opportunities.

  3. Fix the structure

Give each job and customer type a clear page, link them together sensibly and fix any technical issues holding the site back.

  4. Write in plain language

Explain each service simply, answer the questions customers ask and make contacting you easy on every page.

  5. Measure with real data

Use Search Console and analytics to see which pages bring calls and enquiries, and improve from there.

Not sure where to start?

Most projects begin with a technical SEO audit. It shows what’s holding your site back and what to fix first, in plain English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do electricians need SEO?

If you want work beyond word of mouth, yes. Customers search for specific jobs such as an EICR, an EV charger installation or an emergency electrician, and the electricians with clear pages for those jobs in their area are the ones they find.

How much does SEO for electricians cost?

Most work starts with a fixed-price SEO audit, from £395 for smaller sites. Anything beyond that is quoted based on what the audit finds, with no long retainer by default.

Should I have separate pages for domestic and commercial work?

Usually, yes. Homeowners, landlords and businesses search differently and need different information, so separate pages help each group find the right service and help Google match you to their searches.

How long does SEO take for an electrical business?

It depends on your competition, your current visibility and what needs fixing. Technical fixes and clearer service pages can show results within weeks; more competitive areas usually take several months of consistent work.

Does my scheme registration help with SEO?

Indirectly. Showing your NICEIC, NAPIT or other scheme registration builds trust with customers, and trust signals like accreditations and genuine reviews help people choose you once they've found you.
