What do people in Devon actually search for?

Devon is not one search market. Demand splits by town and moves with the seasons, so a single page about Devon rarely covers both ends of the county well.

Rather than quote someone else’s figures, I publish original Devon search data. Across 28 Devon places, Exeter is the most searched destination for things to do, at about 64,900 UK searches in the year to August 2026, up 20%. Across the county those searches fell 15% year on year, with most seaside towns down about a fifth (see Devon’s most searched destinations).

The same split shows up at service level. “estate agents exeter” averages around 600 UK searches a month against 300 for “estate agents barnstaple”, and in the city “hotels in exeter” takes about 1,900 a month. Those are separate pages, not one page about Devon.

So the work here is organised by place as well as by service:

  • In or near the city, start with SEO in Exeter.
  • In North Devon, there is a dedicated page for SEO in Barnstaple.
  • For Google Business Profile and map results anywhere in the county, see local SEO.

What does keyword research involve?

Keyword research finds the searches your customers actually use and maps each one to the page that should rank for it.

This includes analysing your market, reviewing competitors, and understanding the intent behind different searches.

The aim is to ensure that every keyword selected matches your business objectives.

Using trusted tools and reliable data, I focus on terms with the right balance of search volume and competition. I also look for opportunities your competitors may have missed.

The result is a clear SEO plan that supports content creation, product or service pages, and wider marketing efforts. By knowing how your audience searches, we can position your website or your client’s website to attract more qualified traffic and improve visibility where it matters most.

What does technical SEO cover?

I run a full technical SEO audit to make sure your website can be crawled, indexed and understood by search engines.

This process identifies issues such as crawl errors, broken links, poor mobile usability, and slow page speeds.

Every recommendation is written so it can be implemented quickly by you, your developer, or your client’s development team.

The goal is to fix the underlying issues that limit rankings and user experience.

With a stronger technical foundation, your website is better placed to perform in search and provide a smooth experience for visitors.

What is on-page SEO?

I optimise your website content so it is clear, relevant, and aligned with the right search terms.

This includes reviewing titles, headings, content structure, and internal linking.

I address content gaps, improve readability, and ensure that each page matches the intent of the search queries it targets.

Where appropriate, I add structured data so that search engines can better interpret your content.

The outcome is a website that is easier to find in search, more relevant to visitors, and more effective at generating enquiries or sales.

I prepare your site for visibility in AI-powered search results.

This includes optimisation for Generative Engine Optimisation, Answer Engine Optimisation, and Generative Search Engine Optimisation.

The process involves structuring content so that it can appear as a direct answer in AI search tools.

I also refine your site for conversational queries and ensure key information is easy for search engines to understand.

This approach helps keep your website visible in both traditional and AI-driven search results.

Learn More About AI SEO

How do you find what’s holding a site back?

I carry out a full review of your website to assess its SEO performance and overall health.

This covers technical setup, on-page optimisation, keyword targeting, and site structure.

The findings are presented in plain language with clear actions that can be implemented by you, your team, or your client’s team. The goal is to give you a practical plan that leads to measurable improvements.

How is Search Console and Analytics data used?

I review Google Search Console and Google Analytics data to find patterns, issues, and opportunities.

This analysis shows which pages are performing well and which need attention.

I look at search queries, click-through rates, and trends over time to guide future SEO work.

The outcome is a set of insights you can use to refine content and target the most valuable search terms.

How do you protect SEO when a new website launches?

I make sure new websites are ready for search engines before they go live.

This includes checking technical setup, reviewing the site structure, and mapping keywords to key pages.

If the site is replacing an older version, I put the right redirects in place to protect existing rankings.

I also ensure sitemaps and indexing settings are correct.

This gives your new website the best chance of being indexed quickly and starting to attract traffic straight away.

SEO for North Devon businesses

I run Lekker Marketing from Ilfracombe, so a lot of this work is for North Devon businesses: independent shops, tourism operators, hospitality brands, ecommerce stores, trades and growing service companies, most of them relying on Google for enquiries, bookings and sales.

When I audit websites here, the same problems come up again and again. Pages search engines can’t crawl or index properly. Important services buried deep in the site. Pages aimed at the wrong searches. Tracking that can’t show which pages bring enquiries. It’s rarely a lack of content.

With over 12 years across agency, freelance and white label SEO, I’ve worked with hospitality businesses, tourism brands, ecommerce companies, SaaS businesses, visitor attractions and local service businesses. A lot of that sits behind NDAs or isn’t publicly attributed, but the experience carries across industries, platforms and search problems.

Why does local SEO matter in North Devon?

Because demand here is local, seasonal and split town by town, and each kind of business competes differently.

Tourism businesses compete for seasonal traffic: UK searches for “holiday parks devon” fall to around 440 a month in November and climb to over 3,000 in July (see when people search for holiday parks in Devon). Trades compete for “near me” searches. Service businesses compete town by town: in Barnstaple alone, people search for restaurants around 500 times a month, dentists 350 and estate agents 300, all with the town’s name in the search.

The businesses that show up for those searches usually have a clear page for each service and place, a complete Google Business Profile and consistent business details across the web. That’s what I focus on: making sure search engines understand what you do, where you do it and why you’re relevant.

Common questions about SEO in Devon

How much does SEO cost?

Most work starts with a fixed-price SEO audit, from £495 for smaller sites. Larger or more complex sites are quoted based on scope, and ongoing support is only agreed where it makes sense.

What do your SEO services include?

Keyword research, technical SEO, on-page SEO, AI search optimisation, Search Console and Analytics analysis, launch SEO for new websites, and regular SEO reviews. Most projects start with an audit that shows which of these matter most for your site.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. There are no long contracts or bloated retainers. Many businesses start with a one-off audit, and ongoing support is there if it makes sense afterwards.

Can my own team or developer do the work?

Yes. Findings are written in plain language with clear actions that you, your team or your developer can implement.

Can you help with a new website launch?

Yes. Launch SEO covers the technical setup, site structure, keyword mapping, redirects from the old site, sitemaps and indexing settings, so a new site doesn't lose the rankings the old one had.

Do I need to be based in Devon to work with you?

No. I run Lekker Marketing from Ilfracombe and work with many North Devon and Devon businesses, but clients come from across the UK. Most SEO work is carried out remotely.

Which areas of North Devon do you cover?

Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Bideford, Braunton, South Molton, Lynton and Lynmouth, Combe Martin, Torrington, Holsworthy and the wider Devon region.
