Does anything actually read llms.txt?
Not much, on the evidence available. Google has said it doesn't support llms.txt for Search, and anAhrefs study of 137,000 sites found that the large majority of llms.txt files were never requested by anything at all. No major AI provider has published documentation saying its systems read the file.
Where it clearly does earn its place is documentation. AI coding assistants pull docs in while they work, and a tidy map of the right pages saves them wading through a site. If you publish developer documentation, an llms.txt is worth having.
For everyone else, treat it as a cheap, speculative bet: it takes ten minutes, it can't hurt your rankings, and if adoption changes you're already set up. What it won't do is make AI tools cite you. That comes from pages that are crawlable, specific and clearly written, which is what mysearch research keeps pointing back to.
The format
The llmstxt.org proposal is short. A file looks like this:

llms.txt questions
What is llms.txt?
A plain text file at the root of a site (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that lists the pages worth reading, in Markdown. It was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard as a way to give AI tools a clean map of a site instead of making them parse navigation and adverts.
Do AI tools actually use llms.txt?
Mostly not, on the evidence so far. Google has said it doesn’t support llms.txt for Search. An Ahrefs study of 137,000 sites found that the large majority of llms.txt files were never requested at all. The clearest real use is AI coding assistants reading documentation sites.
Should I add one anyway?
It’s cheap to add and it can’t hurt your SEO, so if you have documentation or a content-heavy site, it’s a reasonable bet. Just don’t expect it to change your AI visibility on its own, and don’t let it replace clear pages, clean HTML and crawlable content.
Where does the file go?
In the root of your domain, so it sits at yoursite.com/llms.txt, served as plain text. Don’t hide it behind a redirect, and don’t block it in robots.txt.
What should go in it?
A title, a one-line summary, and links to the pages that explain what you do: services, pricing, documentation and your best guides. Keep it short. A long list of every page is the opposite of the point.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt controls what crawlers may fetch and is supported by every major search engine. llms.txt is a suggestion about what’s worth reading, and support for it is voluntary and currently rare.
