Be clear about what FAQ schema does now
FAQ markup used to expand your listing in Google with drop-down questions. That mostly stopped in August 2023, when Googlelimited FAQ rich resultsto well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Any tool promising stars or drop-downs from FAQ schema is selling you something that ended.
What the markup still does is state each question and its answer unambiguously, for search engines and for AI tools that read your page to build an answer. That's worth having, as long as the questions are real ones your customers ask and the answers are actually on the page.
Writing answers worth marking up
- Answer in the first sentence. Say the thing, then add the detail.
- Use the customer's words for the question, not your internal jargon.
- Be specific. Prices, timescales and conditions are what people are searching for.
- Keep it on the page. The visible text and the markup should match.
My own research into which searches show AI Overviews found that question searches are where AI answers appear most: 87% of question and definition searches showed one. That's why clear answers matter more than the markup itself. The studies are on the research page.

FAQ schema questions
What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema (FAQPage in schema.org) is JSON-LD code that lists the questions on a page and the answer to each one, so search engines and AI tools can read them without interpreting your layout.
Does FAQ schema still show rich results in Google?
Not for most websites. In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health sites. Everyone else can still add the markup, but it won’t expand the listing in search results.
Is FAQ schema worth adding then?
It can be. It states your answers plainly for anything reading the page, including AI search tools, and it’s a useful discipline: if an answer is worth marking up, it’s worth writing clearly. It isn’t a ranking factor, and it won’t rescue a thin page.
Do the questions have to be visible on the page?
Yes. Google’s structured data guidelines say marked-up content must be visible to users. Marking up questions and answers that aren’t on the page risks a manual action.
How many questions should a page have?
As many as genuinely belong on it. Two or three well-answered questions are worth more than ten padded ones. Answer the questions customers actually ask.
Where do I paste the code?
Into the `<head>` of the page with the questions on it, or anywhere in the body. In WordPress, most SEO plugins have a custom header code field for a single page.
