When do Christmas shopping searches start? A calendar for online shops

Christmas shopping searches start earlier than the season feels. In the UK, advent calendar searches are already climbing in August, Christmas trees and decorations peak in November, and gift searches peak in December. Across 13 gift searches, 1 in 5 of the autumn’s searches had happened before 1 November 2025.
The figures are monthly UK search estimates from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer for 35 Christmas shopping searches, such as “christmas gift ideas”, “advent calendar” and “black friday deals”, from September 2024 to August 2026. That covers two Christmases, and they follow almost the same pattern.

Read the calendar from the top. The searches that get going earliest are advent calendars, gifts for teenagers and kids, and gifts for him and her. The searches at the bottom barely move until late November: Christmas jumpers, crackers, cards and secret Santa gifts all do most of their searching in December.
Three groups stand out:
- Advent calendars start in late summer. “advent calendar” searches were 7.6 times their June and July level by August 2025, and peaked in November at about 294,000 searches. 35% of its September to December searches came before 1 November. For “beauty advent calendar”, it was 45%.
- Trees, decorations and pyjamas peak in November. “christmas tree” had about 629,000 searches in November 2025 and 622,000 in December. Christmas decorations, artificial trees and Christmas pyjamas also peaked in November.
- Gifts peak in December, but start in October. Every gift idea search peaked in December 2025, yet “christmas gifts” and “stocking fillers” had both done about a fifth of their autumn searching before November.

The 2024 season was close to identical. Gift searches were 20% done by 1 November in both years, and 54% by 1 December.
How big is Christmas for gift searches?
Very big. Across the 13 gift searches, December 2025 had 8.8 times as many searches as June 2025. For searches with “christmas” in them, the jump is far larger: “christmas gifts” was 68 times its June level in December, and “stocking fillers” 65 times.
General gift searches have other peaks too. “gifts for him” rises in January and February for Valentine’s Day, “gifts for mum” in March for Mother’s Day and “gifts for dad” in June for Father’s Day. A gift page built for December can be reused through the year.
Sales searches are the most concentrated of all. “black friday” had about 1.3 million UK searches in November 2025, and 94% of its autumn searching was over by 1 December. “boxing day sales” does almost all of its searching in December, and “january sales” peaks in January.
What does Google show for these searches?
Ahrefs recorded an AI Overview on 19 of the 35 searches, including “christmas jumper”, “secret santa gifts”, “black friday” and all five delivery and deadline searches. Product listings (Google’s free shopping results) appeared on 24 of the 35, including all 12 seasonal product searches. That’s two things for an online shop to work on: product data that can appear in shopping results, and clear answers to the questions people ask, like last posting dates and delivery cut-offs.
What does this mean for online shops?
Be ready a season early. Advent calendar and decoration pages need to be live and indexed by September, and gift guides by October. A page published in December arrives after half the searching is done.
Keep your Christmas pages at the same address every year. A gift guide at the same URL keeps the links and rankings it earned last year. Update it, don’t replace it.
Answer the deadline questions. Last order dates, delivery cut-offs and returns over Christmas are searched in December and often answered in an AI Overview. Put them on one clear page.
Plan for the other gifting peaks. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day all lift the same gift searches. See web design, including ecommerce sites and how I approach AI SEO.
How was this measured?
I used Ahrefs Keywords Explorer’s UK database to pull monthly search estimates for 35 Christmas shopping searches from September 2024 to August 2026, in four groups: gift ideas, seasonal products, sales events, and delivery and deadlines. “Done before 1 November” is the share of each search’s September to December searches made in September and October. The calendar shows each month as a share of that search’s busiest month. Search result features are the ones Ahrefs recorded for each keyword in September 2026.
Limits. Ahrefs’ monthly figures are modelled estimates, so they’re best used for the shape of the season rather than exact counts. Some searches, like “secret santa gifts” and “cyber monday”, show near-identical curves in both years, which reflects that modelling. Monthly data can’t show which week searches start rising. All-year searches like “next day delivery” and “click and collect” are left out of the calendar.
